Third World Combines Role-Playing and Real-Time Tactical Combat
In An Epic Struggle for Domination
Santa Monica, CA, April 10th, 1998 -- Activision, Inc.
(Nasdaq: ATVI) today announced Third World, the first title in its three-game development agreement
with Redline Games. A new style of real-time tactical RPG, Third World features
a unique 3-D graphics engine. Set in a grim future, players lead a band of heroes
in a desperate struggle for survival and control that rages across a decaying
planet. The game is being developed by Redline Games, founded by James
Anhalt and Ronald Millar, two experienced and accomplished programmers and
designers whose joint credits include Diablo, Warcraft II and MechWarrior 2. Third
World will be published by Activision and is expected to ship later this winter.
"Redline Games is combining the best elements of real-time strategy and role-
playing games with Third World," states Robert Kotick, Chairman and C.E.O.,
Activision, Inc. "By bringing together for the first time real-time combat, squad-
level tactics and character creation and development, Third World promises to
revolutionize tactical gaming. Featuring Ron Millar’s signature game design,
Third World will do for the tactical genre what Warcraft did for strategy and
Diablo did for role-playing."
In Third World, players battle rival gangs for power in a post-apocalyptic world
of urban war zones and industrial sprawl. Players assemble their gangs from a
variety of unique races, such as Mutants, Androids, Cyborgs and Aliens, each
with their own history, special abilities and character classes. Characters gain
new skills and abilities as they collect technology and artifacts to aid them in
their struggle for dominance. Gaining power depends upon the cutthroat
application of tactics and strategy and the skillful completion of missions.
Utilizing Redline's new 3-D True Perspective game engine, Third World will
redefine the tactical genre with real-time 3-D characters and environments, 360-
degree rotating camera angles, in-depth character creation and development, an
intuitive interface, and randomly generated worlds and scenarios. Third World
will support multiplayer games of up to 8 players, free Internet play over
Activision’s ActivLink service, and allow gamers to set up their own servers
and customize their own worlds.
"RPG fans will get off on customizing and building up their gang. Tactical fans
will thrive on conquering and defending the city’s buildings and resources.
Action fans will love the real-time combat and 3-D engine. This game is going to
rock," said Ron Millar, Lead Designer and Vice President of Redline Games.
"We’re thrilled to be working with Activision on Third World. They understand
how games are made and are giving us the freedom to realize our vision while
fully supporting us with their marketing and distribution expertise. It’s an ideal
combination," said Redline Games’ Lead Programmer and President James
Anhalt.
