After Universe, Core Design is back in the adventure world with The Big Red Adventure developed by Dynabyte, an Italian developer.
The first thing you will notice when installing the game is the huge amount of data it contains. Over 60 megabytes will be installed on your hard disk from the twelve high-density disks included in the game. As it seems to take forever to install, we strongly recommend the use of the smartdrive provided with the DOS to reduce the installation time.
When you start the game, you first notice the SVGA graphics which is always a good point for adventure games. The interface is classical although not visible during the game leaving the player with a greater view of the scene. If you want to check your inventory or perform an action, just hold down the right mouse button and select the type of action you want from the panel or any object from the inventory. There are four possible actions. You can pick up items, open doors or objects, examine things and talk to other characters. If it is possible, you can combine items together from your inventory to create a new object or simply to make them operational.
The backgrounds use digitized hand rendered drawings with 256 colors that depict numerous scenes from Moscow with humor. The game is set in the Russian capital at the time following the fall of communism. Capitalism is now the new fashion in Lenin's land, but there are things that will never change, like queues. While a majority of the population has great hopes for this new era, old fashioned communists would rather prefer to reinstall the old regime and get back all their old privileges.
You will successively play the role of three characters (Doug, Donna and Dino) who are foreign adventurers visiting Russia. Accidentally, they will interfere with the plans of Doctor Virago and his communist friends, and find themselves involved in the action.
The Big Red Adventure offers many good points: the high-resolution graphics allow a greater level of detail, the game provides full-screen graphics, there are three different characters to control and over 50 to interact with, and it comes with a lot of humor! With more than 100 locations, The Big Red Adventure will provide players with various fun puzzles that will keep them busy.
