Back in the 80's, the Atari 2600 games ruled the world and from this glorious era, we remember famous titles like Pitfall!, Hero and River Raid. Now in the middle of the 90's, Activision just released the Atari 2600 Action Pack for Windows. The first volume includes fifteen titles featuring Grand Prix, Seaquest, Kaboom!, Chopper Command, River Raid and others. Although the graphics are very outdated compared to those featured in most of the games today, the Action Pack can be entertaining for some users. Whoever played with the Atari console will have the pleasure to discover that their favorite games they grew up with, are back for the PC's.
We mentioned above that graphics are elementary, even ridiculous, but it's nothing compare to the sounds. They sound like beeps and can get on your nerves, so you might want to turn the sound off after a while.
Unfortunately, although it is funny to play with ancient games on powerful machines like the PC's, it is not enough to keep you interested for hours. Let's say it will be funny for people who know the games and played with them when they were kids (like me), but for people used to nowadays games, their interest may be just too short.
Activision plans to release three additional volumes between July 95 and February 96, but it might be better if they could release updated versions like the awaited Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (coming this summer) instead of games that only bring back memories.
With its low price, the Atari 2600 Action Pack might be considered as a good value by gamers who enjoyed playing these games when they were kids.
