If you like both adventure and action games, Ecstatica is what you need. A perfect balance of action and adventure that will bring you to a world of phantasmagoria and terror. When you start the game, you can choose to be a man or a woman playing the role of a knight in the Middle Ages. On your way, you discover a village that seems to be uninhabited at first, however, you soon notice that this is not the case. Monsters and other creatures determined to exterminate you appear at every corner of the little town.

The village named Tirish is under an evil spell that makes every creature a demon. You will have to fight for your life against giant spiders, minotaurs, gnomes, werewolves, etc.. either hand to hand (in which case you will not be able to defeat large opponents) or with weapons that you will find in the village. During your exploration of the village, you will discover helpful clues in your quest against the evil forces.

The game utilises a new ellipsoid technology to give a more realistic look to the characters. Over 200 locations will provide the player with a real time interaction through hundreds of animated scenes and multiple camera views reminiscent of "Alone in the Dark". The movements are vivid and realistic inviting you right into the game instead of merely watching the action on the screen. You will really experience what a nightmare can be with fear, terror, madness and ultimately, death.

The atmosphere of the game is tense, nearly oppressive and the macabre music and sounds reinforce this impression.

A very interesting feature when saving a game, lets you visualize in a small window where your location is. It is just more intuitive than a sentence commentary that we usually add to a saved game.

You may experience slow animations depending on the speed of your CD-ROM drive (especially for single speed owners) and on anything lower than a 486 processor. There are three options available for the amount of hard drive space the game will use ranging from a minimum size to a full 70 Mb. The last option may be for the single-speed owners who do not want to sacrify speed over space on the hard disk.

Conclusion:

Ecstatica establishes a new standard for this kind of game and places titles from the "Alone in the Dark" series in second place. If you are searching for some intense action with a taste of adventure in a deserted village full of demonic hordes, Ecstatica will bring you all the excitement you can dream of.
