Following the huge success of Mortal Kombat II in both the arcades and on consoles, Acclaim finally decided to release a PC version that leaves nothing to envy the consoles.
Two versions of the game are available on floppy and CD-ROM, but there is no difference between the two. Besides, the CD-ROM version has to be installed completely on the hard disk because Mortal Kombat II can not be played directly from the CD. The only advantage to the CD-ROM version is that the copy protection has been removed and changed by the obligation to keep the CD in the CD-ROM drive while playing with the game. In the floppy version, you are asked to enter codes from the manual.
Each character has special moves and learning them will save your life more than once. The movements have many surprises in store for you, sometimes with light effects, incantations and much more. As the game's animations are quite realistic with blood, the game is rated to ages 17 and above.
There are two methods to play with Mortal Kombat II. In the first one, the player alone must defeat all the enemies, one by one, to reach the ultimate adversary Shao Kahn. It will take time and several attempts before you can defeat many opponents in a row, and only the usage of special moves will help you in your combats. The other possibility is to play against a human opponent in the versus mode. Each player must choose a character in which to fight the other player with. Note that players can both choose the same character to fight each other.
The basic moves are Crouch, Jump, Flip, Move right or left and there are 4 simple moves to hit your adversary: High Punch, Low Punch, High Kick and Low Kick. Advanced moves like Uppercut, Foot Sweep, etc.. use the basic moves to form powerful attacks that do more damage. The special moves are even more complicated to execute but are really devastating for your opponent.
The other features of Mortal Kombat II are Friendships, Babalities and Fatalities. The first one can only be done if you do not use any punch moves in the Fatality round (you win in the second round). I will let you discover for yourself what the Friendships are all about. The Babalities can be executed only if you didn't use the High Punch in the Fatality round. Remark that a Friendship can be done after a Babality and you can even do multiple Babalities (try doing three in a row). Finally, Fatalities are finishing moves to defeat your enemy. Characters usually have one or two different finishing moves, and the results are often very gory.
Mortal Kombat II is the best arcade conversion ever developed on the PC. As Acclaim will be releasing other titles later on this year for the PC, this is good news for gamers who look for quality products.
