Willis Set to Star as Industry's First Virtual Buddy
Los Angeles, CA, January 22, 1997 -- Film superstar Bruce Willis will
deliver gaming justice in Activision
Inc.'s (Nasdaq: ATVI) upcoming arcade-style action shooter Apocalypse.
The title marks the first time that an original creative property has been
designed specifically for an actor of Willis' magnitude on the Sony
PlayStation.
In the great tradition of Hollywood buddy pictures, Willis will star as the
player's partner, the interactive entertainment industry's first virtual partner.
Activision will utilize revolutionary cyber-scanning and motion capture
techniques to create an entirely computer-generated 3-D character based on
Willis. As part of his multi-million dollar package, Willis received an equity
interest in Activision and a profit participation in the title. The deal was
brokered by Willis' agent, Arnold Rifkin, William Morris Agency Worldwide
Head of Motion Pictures and Lewis Henderson of the William Morris New
Media Department. The announcement was made today by Bobby Kotick,
Chairman and CEO, Activision, Inc. Apocalypse, Activision's newest franchise
for the console platform, is expected to ship this Fall.
"When these cats from Activision showed me the new graphics and interaction
of this software on Apocalypse, I was blown away," states Willis. "There
is nothing on the market like it. All other games immediately become obsolete.
I'm proud to be working with Activision on our new game Apocalypse."
"With approximately eight million PlayStations in households worldwide, there
now exists an installed base sufficient to support a title with the widespread
mass market appeal of a star like Bruce Willis," states Kotick. "Activision
is excited to present powerful new technologies that allow us fully to
capture Bruce's aggressive dynamism and create unparalleled, explosive and
action-packed gameplay."
Apocalypse is set in a dark, violent future where science and religion
have become competing pillars of society, each offering their own version of
salvation. Wielding weapons based on nanotechnology, players must fight
side-by-side with their virtual partner to defeat The Four Horsemen of the
Apocalypse and prevent the end of humanity.
Apocalypse will feature a new proprietary animation system and engine
technology that Activision has been developing over the past two years. The
game will deliver stunningly smooth, lightning-quick explosions, character
movements and special effects.
